Laura Grimaldi
Nata a Bari, vive e lavora a Capurso (BA). Pittrice, scenografa e performer, si laurea all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma. Lavora come scenografa e marionettista presso il Teatro Mongiovino fino al 2014, anno in cui si trasferisce negli Stati Uniti. In North Carolina entra a far parte della compagnia teatrale Paperhand Puppet Intervention come artista di studio, puppet maker, performer e musicista. Espone i suoi dipinti in varie occasioni negli USA con la Orange County Artists Guild e la Durham Art Guild. Dal 2018 avvia un progetto di arte politica con un blog, esposto in sedi come la University of North Carolina e la University of Kansas.
Nel 2023 torna in Italia e dirige la realizzazione di un murale dedicato ad Alessandro Leogrande a Bari, in collaborazione con il CPIA1. La sua pratica unisce arte visiva, attivismo e memoria collettiva.

L’opera Stella Maris prende il nome da uno degli appellativi più antichi della Vergine Maria, “Stella del Mare”, guida e protettrice di naviganti e migranti. Il dipinto si configura come un amuleto visivo, dove simboli appartenenti alle tre religioni monoteiste del Mediterraneo – la stella a otto punte cristiana, la mano di Fatima islamica (o mano di Miriam nella tradizione ebraica) – si fondono in un segno unico di protezione e unità.
In basso, tre figure avvolte da coperte termiche dorate evocano la Sacra Famiglia nella Fuga in Egitto e, al tempo stesso, i migranti contemporanei. L’oro delle coperte richiama l’iconografia sacra e ribadisce la dignità umana di chi oggi affronta il mare per sopravvivere. Sulla barca che li accoglie è inciso l’articolo 98 della Convenzione delle Nazioni Unite sul Diritto del Mare, che sancisce l’obbligo di prestare soccorso.
Stella Maris è un’opera di denuncia e compassione, una preghiera laica per il diritto alla vita, alla salvezza e alla speranza.

Laura Grimaldi
Born in Bari, she lives and works in Capurso (BA). A painter, set designer, and performer, she graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. She worked as a set designer and puppeteer at Teatro Mongiovino until 2014, when she moved to the United States. In North Carolina, she joined the theater company Paperhand Puppet Intervention as a studio artist, puppet maker, performer, and musician. She exhibited her paintings on several occasions in the US with the Orange County Artists Guild and the Durham Art Guild. Since 2018, she has led a political art project through a blog, presented at venues including the University of North Carolina and the University of Kansas.
In 2023, she returned to Italy and directed the creation of a mural dedicated to Alessandro Leogrande in Bari, in collaboration with CPIA1. Her practice blends visual art, activism, and collective memory.

Stella Maris takes its name from one of the oldest titles of the Virgin Mary, “Star of the Sea,” protector of sailors and migrants. The painting functions as a visual amulet, where symbols from the three monotheistic Mediterranean religions—the Christian eight-pointed star, the Islamic Hand of Fatima (also known as the Hand of Miriam in Jewish tradition)—merge into a single sign of protection and unity.
Below, three figures wrapped in golden thermal blankets evoke both the Holy Family’s Flight into Egypt and present-day migrants. The gold of the blankets recalls sacred iconography and reaffirms the human dignity of those who cross the sea to survive. On the boat that carries them is engraved Article 98 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which establishes the duty to render assistance.
Stella Maris is a work of denunciation and compassion—a secular prayer for the right to life, to rescue, and to hope.

ولدت في باري، وتعيش وتعمل في كابورسو (BA). رسّامة، ومصممة مشاهد، ومؤدية، تخرجت من أكاديمية الفنون الجميلة في روما. عملت كمصممة مشاهد ومحركة دمى في مسرح مونجيوفينو حتى عام 2014، ثم انتقلت إلى الولايات المتحدة. في ولاية كارولاينا الشمالية، انضمت إلى فرقة Paperhand Puppet Intervention كمصممة دمى، وفنانة، ومؤدية، وموسيقية. عرضت لوحاتها في عدة مناسبات في الولايات المتحدة مع Orange County Artists Guild وDurham Art Guild. ومنذ عام 2018، أطلقت مشروعًا للفن السياسي من خلال مدونة تم عرضها في جامعات مثل جامعة كارولاينا الشمالية وجامعة كانساس.

تستمد Stella Maris اسمها من أحد أقدم ألقاب السيدة العذراء مريم، “نجمة البحر”، حامية البحّارة والمهاجرين. تتحول اللوحة إلى تميمة بصرية، حيث تندمج رموز الديانات التوحيدية الثلاث في البحر الأبيض المتوسط — النجمة المسيحية ذات الثماني رؤوس، يد فاطمة في الإسلام (أو يد مريم في التقليد اليهودي) — في رمز واحد للحماية والوحدة.
في الجزء السفلي، تظهر ثلاث شخصيات ملفوفة ببطانيات حرارية ذهبية، تستدعي في آنٍ واحد رحلة العائلة المقدسة إلى مصر والمهاجرين المعاصرين. يشير اللون الذهبي إلى الأيقونات الدينية، ويؤكد كرامة الإنسان الذي يخوض البحر للبقاء على قيد الحياة. على القارب الذي يحملهم، نُقش نص المادة 98 من اتفاقية الأمم المتحدة لقانون البحار، التي تنص على واجب تقديم المساعدة.

劳拉·格里马尔迪
